I came back here looking for the hardware model in getting tech support on something else and saw a lot of problem reviews.I have been running this router since March, 2010 and thought I should share my experiences with it.
First, connections have been generally quite reliable.I have connected desktop computers and printers by both CAT5 and WiFi.I have also connected a variety of smartphones, tablets, laptops game consoles and my smart TV without difficulty.OS connections have included Windows versions from XP through Win 10, iOS, Android, OSX, Nintendo's Wii/Wii U OS and whatever drives my 50" Panasonic plasma TV.
The router is located in my basement office/man-cave and the 2.4 GHz connection still reaches nearly to the street.That means through the floor, a couple of interior walls and a brick exterior wall.The 5 GHz connection is, of course, more range restricted.While it will make it through the floor and walls within the house, it is damped enough that I generally get better throughput with the 2.4 GHz connection.I typically keep the 5 GHz reserved for equipment in the basement where I can take best advantage of the speed.
As far as throughput?Ok, it's "rated" at 300/300 Mbs, but the reality is those numbers are typical bogus for ANY router.It just gives you a benchmark to compare products.Don't expect anything close in the real world where physics intervenes unless you are in line of sight at just the right distance, temperature and humidity.Depending on current conditions, my wife's laptop, with a floor and a couple of walls in between will still pull 95-100 Mbs.Prevailing conditions can push her over 100 or as low as 54, but both are unusual.My desktop, when I use wireless instead of CAT5, it will pull 150 Mbs on the 5 GHz channel, minimum.On CAT5, it screams.
As I said, though, numbers don't mean so much in real world.It's actual performance is what matters.It has had HD video streaming on the TV, heavy internet browsing with frequent WiFi printing, multiple smartphones (one running YouTube) while I was on Facetime with my tablet recording a podcast on the desktop (which was also running YouTube for clips).And lately, I've had my son adding in running CoD on the Wii U's gamepad to the mix (i.e. while watch a streamed movie and using YouTube on his iPad for a level walkthrough), often on top of some of the above.I can't complain about the performance at all.
I will note that I do have to reboot it every several months, however I do know already that the problem is almost always the cable modem rather than the router.I have found, though, that I typically get better results when I reboot both together.Some IT guys do this regularly as routine maintenance, however, I only do it when I see a persistent performance compromise.As I said, though, it is almost always related to the cable modem and most typically after Charter has an outage or service interruption.The web-based control panel does seem a bit sluggish, but it does what perform acceptably for its intended use.That's not something you should have to get into very often, if at all.
I haven't had any experience with the Genie apps or the Readyshare software, though I'm in the process up doing a variety of home computing upgrades and will likely add these features over the next couple of weeks.If I do so, I will update this review.
Overall, I've been quite satisfied with this router and will strongly consider Netgear again.
This is the third router of this model that I have used. This particular version (5) came out in 2015. The first version came out in 2010 so the architecture is somewhat dated. I purchased it again because the settings I used were 99% the same and it was moderately priced for the features it has. This version 5 unit has a few features not found in version 4 or earlier. You can setup the router to act as a VPN server for secure access to your LAN remotely(say from a laptop, tablet or smart phone.). There is a special case support for IPTV that cannot use NAT firewall. The indicator lights are somewhat different. The previous versions' connection lights stayed on solid if there was a connection. Now they flash when there is activity, including wireless activity.
I think the router itself is a decent one and setup was easy. But when we tried to obtain some support (a printer connection issue), I received back the oddest response: "It seems that the purchase date specified for this registration is beyond a reasonable "presumed shelf life" (difference between manufacture date and purchase date). To validate the product’s support entitlement, please attach a copy of your device’s proof of purchase on an email and send it to [email protected].
I ordered this on June 29, 2016, received and installed it on July 1, and received the above response less than 12 hours later. I sent them my Amazon receipt but today received another e-mail saying that since they had not heard from me, they were closing the support ticket. Now, seriously, it was in new packaging and sold as new and it seems to me that any company ought to support what it sells. Given this experience, I would recommend almost any other company BESIDES Netgear.
As an aside, I managed to solve my connectivity issues on my own, no thanks to Netgear. They may make a decent product but their support is non-existent.
The stock NetGear firmware is flaky and slow. Signal power was very poor inside my house (brick and concrete, not drywall) not being able to connect two rooms away from its location. There's no way to set the router's time and date by hand, and it tries to use NTP (Network Time Protocol) in order to fetch time from remote servers. This would be okay, however it only tries to use the hardcoded Netgear's servers (that are usualy down or broken), and there's no way to pick alternate NTP servers. The access restriction, firewall, and VPN setup were also quite limited. Five firmware upgrades since I bought it didn't improve nor solve my issues.
Fortunately, this router is compatible with DD-WRT. After reading DD-WRT's on-line documentation, I was able to replace Netgear's firmware with DD-WRT in an easy to follow, ten minutes, two-stage process. It is now faster, properly in sync with global NTP servers, and there are waaaaaaaay more features you can control. In particular, I was able too boost transmission power: not only am I able to use it anywhere in my apartment, but I can get a good signal from the ground floor (I live on the 7th. floor) also.
It is a good piece of hardware with a lousy firmware. Plan to use DD-WRT if you want to enjoy it thoroughly. If you feel that installing DD-WRT is way over your abilities, and don't have a friend nearby able to help you, don't buy it.

I would have given the NetGear WNR3500Lv2 a five star rating if it weren't for the fact that my son and I spent two hours trying to figure out why the Wi-Fi download speed was less than 1 Mb/sec and yet the upload speed was 6 Mb/sec (normal).LAN download speed through the router was a normal 27 to 30 Mb/sec.The signal strength was excellent so we knew that wasn't the issue (and that wouldn't affect just the download speed anyway). We finally found the culprit!The factory default setting for what is called "Enable WMM (Wi-Fi multimedia) settings" was enabled.To disable this setting log into the router in the usual wayand click on "Advanced" > "Setup" > "QoS Setup" then uncheck the box next to "Enable WMM (Wi-Fi multimedia) settings". NetGear should not have set this as a enabled by default or at least made the customer aware of this being a cause of extremely slow download speeds.
We did not install Tomato firmware due to several forum complaints of this router getting "bricked" after installing Tomato but did upgrade the NetGear firmware to V1.2.0.32_40.0.74.
So far its working great and produces very little heat which is a good thing for longevity of component life.
I bought this router because I wanted to try out the Advanced Tomato Firmware and install the NordVPN. When I first received the router, I follow NETGEAR’s instructions, but the router would automatically change its ip-address to 10.0.0.1. It also couldn’t be configured as a router. But also, no matter which configuration I ran, it wouldn’t connect to the internet. I tried three times, resetting the router each time and following NETGEAR’s instructions, but to no avail.
I had already downloaded the tomato firmware to my computer a day before, so instead of playing around trying to get the router to work with Netgear’s settings, I disconnected the WAN cable or internet cable, ran some basic setup just to get into the router’s settings and flashed it with the advance tomato firmware. After the firmware was installed, I restarted the router, reset the NVRAM to ensure any previous firmware configurations were cleared, entered my personal information, performed a few configurations and had it running in no time.
I connected it to the internet and got 111Mbps upload and 117Mbps download…using ATT fiber optic internet service. I did some other firmware configuration and installed the NordVPN service. Having the VPN installed on a router provides the advantage of protecting every device connected to the router, even wireless devices. I have experienced issues connecting to some sites through the VPN, so I left the ATT Gateway’s wireless radio on to connect to those websites by bypassing the VPN.
I know a few reviewers mentioned about their router being bricked when installing the tomato firmware. I didn’t experience that issue, but one must make sure to get the right firmware before proceeding to flash the router, including making sure to get the right firmware version. For example, the model number for my router is WNR3500Lv2, so when looking for the tomato firmware one must make sure to download the firmware version V2 and not V1 or some other version.
Anyway, so far, the router has worked without any issues. For $45.00US, free tomato firmware and a VPN service provider installed within the system, you can have a very secured internet experience and connection. I’m still learning about the tomato firmware settings and configurations, but for what I can see, it’s a decent firmware and worth its installation.
8/14/2018: Just wanted to provide some updated information. I replaced NordVPN with IPVanish, mainly because some sites, including Amazon, won’t work with NordVPN…Ipvanish does cost more. For clarity; there are a few tomato firmware, the one I used and recommend is tomato firmware advance.You can access it here advancedtomato.com, just add the www on the front. I recommend setting up a separate WIFI guest network for safety purposes…it’s simple to do and very cool feature. I also recommend a weekly or monthly automatic restart schedule, this will clear any memory issues and ensure the router run at its peak.
If you want a router that likes to randomly disconnect from every device you own, this is the router for you! If you want a router that is likely to brick itself when you attempt to update it, this is the router for you! If you want a router that pretends that it's working when it's actually not, this is the router for you!
There is seriously something wrong with these routers. I've had 2 of them now. The first one bricked itself on an update. I assumed it was my fault and bit the bullet by buying a new one. Now, I no longer hold that assumption.
This router is practically useless. First off, as others have mentioned, you have to change a setting just to get it to work out of the box.
However, you're then subjected to the utter horrible quality of the router itself. It's apparently unable to keep a stable connection. Every few minutes, every device I own disconnects from the wifi. Again, I assumed this was an issue at the modem, but then I realized during the intermittent drops of signal, my wired devices had no issue at all.
This signal drop was infrequent at first. Now, it happens every few minutes and remains dead for up to 5 minutes at a time. Again, I checked my wired devices and they're just fine. The router itself doesn't indicate a problem, just that everything that isn't wired has disconnected.
Avoid this router at all costs. It'll save you a huge headache either immediately or in the near future.
Great range that can get even better with a somewhat easy antenna upgrade. DD-WRT capable makes it an automatic 3 stars, but the WiFi range, flexibility and value make it a 5 star in my opinion. The base is practically useless but still works well laying on its side. If you can find these for under $15 and you need a decent Wifi Router that is DD-WRT capable, this is a winner. Works great in Client/Bridge configurations for when its challenging the run a hard wired connection to a room. Be sure to check your routers chips match up for best results (or just pick up 2 of these).

Since there is such a thing as a Crazy Cat Lady, I hereby nominate myself as being a Crazy Router Dude. Stashed away in my garage are more than a couple boxes with nothing but wireless routers of virtually every brand, size, shape and potential functionality. After filling most of these boxes, I decided upon Netgear as my brand of choice. I've several of their models stowed away for what purpose I do not know. Sadly, this here router is about to join the Boxed-Up Brigade and not for a good reason.
I purchased this router a year after I purchased a Netgear R6300.NETGEAR Smart WiFi Router AC1750 Dual Band Gigabit(R6300v2) The R6300 was installed at another location and has never given a lick of trouble. I am on my second RMA for the R6100 and rather than pay the $29.95 "Advance Replacement Fee" I decided to scrap the router and apply the savings to the purchase of another router from a different company.
The R6100 was just as easy to set up as the R6300. Just plug it in, change the stock router settings to your own (don't want to upset your neighbor who's stealing your wifi, right?) and route. Unlike some, I rather like the Netgear Genie application. I didn't use it for set up, but I like that I can graphically tell which devices are connected with purdy user assigned icons. I suppose it has many other features you could use, but I'm usually too busy using the thing to turn off the kid's wifi when I hear the wrong sounds coming from their tablets.
In fact my only complaint with the two R6100s I have owned has been the LAN ports. Being a dinosaur, I have a house that I wired with Cat6 cable. I therefore actually use the quaint things on the back that look like a big POTS jack. I really didn't mind the fact that although it says "Fast Ethernet" in the title of the item, it's really only 10/100. Or rather it would be if the jacks were properly soldered into the device. On my two examples, after about four months of use, the entire block of 4 ethernet jacks on the device came loose and only intermittently connect. As my VoIP and other devices depend on ethernet, this is an unacceptable fault. I've used strain relief devices, hand cut pieces of Styrofoam and just plain jiggling to get the things to stay connected, they won't.
So I give up for now. I'd try to go steal the R6300 back from my Brother-in-Law, but then I'd have to talk to him.
I am of two minds about this review.On the one hand, the router was easy to set-up, is quite customizable (the netgear genie app is handy) and supports our wireless items ( a couple smartphones, a couple tablets, PC, Playstation, etc.) effortlessly....when it works!And that's just the thing.It would only work for about two days at a time.Then somewhere in the wee hours of the morning while we were sound asleep, it drops the 5Ghz signal.That would be annoying, in itself, if it did not cause the 2.4 Ghz signal to be inaccessible, as well.That is just frustrating. Is it a small thing to reboot a router? Sure it is.It reboots in about 3 minutes and everything is fine for a couple days.The thing is, if I wanted to play semi-pro LAN administrator, I would have spent the time and money to set-up a really impressive home network.I don't want to do that.I want to pull the router from the box, plug it in and have it work.That is why I bought the Netgear product. I uploaded new firmware, through the genie app, the first time the signal drop happened.No effect.After another three weeks of intermittent signal, I called tech support.It was a long process, but I finally got even more current firmware than genie was showing update availability for.The tech helped me change some of the LAN settings.Things have been fine for about 5 days now.That is the longest uninterrupted stretch we have had.Let's hope it holds. Bottom line, good hardware for the price.Buggy firmware makes it unnecessarily high maintenance for something that should work right out of the box.
I have never had more trouble with a router in my life. Impossible to install without a 30 min phone call to customer service, and then decides to kick off and stop working 2 hours later. I miss my cisco.
After 9 months, I am Not happy with this router.Had an old N300 netgear that worked well with 5 devices connected; but, as the family grew, so did the number of devices.We're now at 7+devices, and it can't handle it ... slow and disconnects are the problem, even when balancing devices/channel.Yes, part of my problem is the internet supplier's 17M download speed, but that's soon to be upgraded ...
My biggest dislike is drop outs and weak signal strength, even though our house is 2,000 sq. ft., 2-story, wood frame.At 25ft. from the router, signal strength is dismal ... 1 - 2 bars at best.
Bottom line ... my expectations WERE NOT met, and I'm very disappointed.
It's a box that does the job. I've used it for years and it's never failed me. Can't compare it to others tho, which makes this review almost useless. If I was a geek, I'd get one of the programmable routers that can eliminate some problems and optimize speed and reliability. I did some research at the time and this seemed to be the best balance of price/performance. I typically get downloads/uploads at 10MB/S (100Mb/s). That limit is from my ISP, this unit can go faster. UPDATE 190713: There is a software update available for this unit. I've been trying to install it for two years but the update is defective and won't install. Down to 4 stars until fixed.
This item worked great for about 6 months, but it continually drops the wireless signal. I've done a number of trouble shooting calls with my internet provider, and the issue is with this router. I now have to restart my router 2-5 times a day to regain wireless signals. I will be buying a different router to replace this one. It is less than a year old.
I guess you get what you pay for. Just as the return period of 30 days ended the router is broken. I have done everything possible to get it to work, including factory reset but it just will not cooperate. On top of it, good luck reaching support. Their online registration doesn't work for me and can't get a phone number without that to even call. Cost me an entire day. 🙁

Only 1 other router currently has this capability, a trendnet router, but it offers none of the user friendly capabilities as this one does. Its so fast, There are a very small number of wifi adapters that will even be able to utilize all 450mbps (most of them intel), so this router should remain top of the line for a good while.
If you are a router junkie, you might know that this router is a true upgrade to the renown WNDR3700 , rather then the WNDR4000. This router packs efficient high power amps on both the 2.4 and 5ghz antennas, meaning better throughput throughout the house and better signal and coverage. Whereas I used to get 3 bars in my room, I now get a full 5.
There is also a full host of features on this router,features any high end router has, such as gigabit connections, full range of led status lights, separate guest networks on both bands, etc.
Now, the router dosnt come with a CD, but that's a plus, you just open a webpage after connecting to the routerit will have a prebuilt SSID and password) and type in routerlogin.net or 192.168.1.1 and press enter. There you will be directed to the "netgear Genie" program where you will have a host of things you can change from basic parameters to higher advanced functions. cool things this has is 2 usb ports which can connect printers and harddrives to your network and DLNA functionality. The Genie menu is very simplistic, with thumbnails of menus that actively changes statuses. There you can check everything, and they have a refined version of their "connected devices" list where you will see every device that is connected to the router (great for checking on intruders)
The physical aspect of this router is just as phenomenal. It comes with the clear base attached so its always standing, and its HUGE, well not that big, but bigger then most other routers. However its glossy meaning it will attract fingerprints. Even with it vertically standing, it has a firm foothold, meaning even with many Ethernet cables pulling on its back, it wont tip.
I took it apart and inside, whereas regular routers have one maybe 2 heatsinks, this one has 6 giant black heatsinks cooling off its cpu and ram blocks. While some other reviews may say there is a fan inside, there isnt, its all passive cooled which is good, it means you wont have dust clogging up the inside of your router. Also, the antennaes are patch antannes, which are taped onto the top half of the shell, so be careful removing it if you plan on taking it apart.
Going from the usual norm of atheros chips, the wndr4500 uses a Broadcom BCM4718 processor, the flagship of the Intensi-fi XLR family of router processors. and also ups the flash ram from the usual 64mb to 128mb.
Overall, this is a very expensive router, but you do get what you pay for. It fixes some of the problems of the previous crown holder, the WNDR3700, such as 5ghz connectivity and signal problems and upgrades the speed to a combined 900mbps on 6 spatial data streams. Saying this router is great for "HD streaming" or "gaming" would be the understatement of the year, it is networking overkill for many tasks. A definite buy if youhave the means to afford it.

After A week or two of testing out its capabilities heavily, i can say this is probably my new favorite router. I have not had a dropped connection yet, or random restarts whatsoever, even with 11 wifi devices connected to the router, traffic was not noticeable. So far so good! future firmware updates should make this router even better.
Recommended setting changes----
-If you dont have any wireless B devices (97% of us) you should set the preamble length to short preamble (under advanced setup-wireless settings tab), this will give a slight boost in thorough put
-while its tempting to set 2.4ghz to 450mbps, i mean, who dosnt want max speed? however 450mbpd uses channel bonding (40mhz channel width), which will cause interference with your neighbor's wifi signal and also your own if their channel happens to fall under yours. If your house has wifi congestion, i suggest using 217mbps mode, this will give you fast speed without interference on your network, and your neighbors will like you more. 450mbps on the 5ghz band however is recommended because the likely hood of any 5ghz signals is small, and to have that signal fall under your 5ghz channel only decreases the chance any problems will arise. My neighborhood for example has 17 2.4ghz signals, 3 jerks who use 40mhz channel widths, but not a single 5ghz user.

-The router is still going strong, Since having it I have not had to reboot, even once! -Firmware updates are not that helpful (except for the first one the boosted range of the 5ghz band), and also not frequent, maybe about one update per couple of months (and each one only fixes 1-2 specific bugs) -Netgear needs to change their wifi policy, this router conforms to the "good neighbor" policy where it will automatically dial down wireless channel width when it detects other similar bands in the area, thus in the options, you can change the router to go "up to" 450mbps -5ghz range while acceptable, wont go all the way to the end of the house

WHEN this router is working, it is fast. However, unless you have time to reboot it multiple times per day, and hours to spend on the phone with Netgear support, buy something else. I spent hours and hours on the phone with Netgear support, usually several times per week. Finally, they advanced me to Level 2 service, which apparently means you do not have to wait on the phone as long before talking to somebody, but still plan on being on the phone a minimum of 30 minutes per call with the tech people. At first, they made all sorts of changes to my computer remotely, which makes one nervous, but when you have this much invested in a router, you would like to get it working more than a few hours at a time.After several months of not being able to correct the problem, Netgear sent me a replacement router. Mind you, not a new router. IT STILL HAD THE BENT PAPER CLIP IN THE BOX THAT THE PRIOR OWNER USED FOR REBOOTING!!!!! The Netgear folks were not as phased by this as I was. They were sure this one would not drop the internet constantly like the last one.Unfortunately, they were wrong.So, I was back to my frequent, lengthy phone conversations with the tech people. I tried everything they suggested, and I tried everything that I saw suggested in different feedback here - I bought a cooling fan just for the router, I bought a new modem.Nothing worked, and the router continued to drop the internet and needed to be rebooted at least once a day, but usually more like 3-5 times per day. After 10 months of working with Netgear Tech support without a solution, I reluctantly gave up and bought an Asus.So far so good with the Asus. Save yourself a lot of time, money and headache, and skip the Netgear.
I bought this to replace my smoothwall router running on an old pentium 2.4 ghz machine. I have netgear access points WND350s in the house, so while I didn't need the wifi aspect, I figured it won't hurt. First the pros: Network Genie for people who know nothing about routers. Advanced configs are great because this is the first router I've seen in ages that allows port forwarding with redirection to another port, which I needed, and smoothwall provided. Cons: it doesn't work out of the box. It will connect to the internet and works great "IF" I give all of my devices a static IP address. Issue being that it will assign a DHCP addy for the first 5-10 minutes that it is powered on, my phones etc will connect. However after that short period of time it is useless and will only allow already connected devices that obtained an IP address, or those which are static to connect. It will not assign new addresses so any wifi or wired Ethernet connection fails.It did work for the first 2 hours and then after that I discovered this bug. So I just disabled the DHCP on the stupid router, and installed DHCP de on my Win7 security camera and dvr box, and now the home network happily buzzes along. So, I'm really only using this as a direct router and then I will also port forward all of my outside ports to my camera's inside the network.Just a shame this bug exists and it would be nice if they can fix it with a firmware upgrade.I can only give it one star because of the DHCP issue and the fact that a regular user who is not a network engineer (which I happen to be) who understands DHCP vs Static, firewalls, static and dynamic routing etc. could NEVER get this to work. I'm not going to send it back because I really doubt there is any hardware issue. It is pretty much rock solid so far other than the issue with DHCP server failing after a few minutes.

I bought this router due that my previous router, an older Netgear one, was starting to drop our internet connection over our WiFi.The old router was 5-6 years old, so I thought it was about time to replace it and purchased this router.
At first, our WiFi remained stable.However, after only a few days of stability, the WiFi once again began going out.The connection would just continue to drop randomly throughout the day, and it seemed to get worse at times.
I thought perhaps it was our ISP, but after a few visits and discussing the issue with the ISP, I discovered it wasn't the ISP.It was both of my Netgear routers.
To be sure, I did some research to find out what was going on and discovered that Netgear has had this issue for quite some time.It has to do with their firmware for their routers.After a certain version, this issue began popping up and has constantly been rearing it's ugly head, regardless of them trying to get rid of the issue. It has been an issue for quite a few years (wasn't one for me with the old router due that I hadn't updated the firmware until late last year, which was right around the time the WiFi dropping issue began).I saw fixes for the issue but it involved rolling back to older versions of the firmware, which I really didn't want to do.
In the end, I decided to get an Arris DG2470 Cable Modem, which has WiFi built into it.Suddenly, the WiFi randomly dropping issue stopped being an issue.It only confirms that Netgear has an issue still with it's firmware to me.
Don't get me wrong, it's a nice router, but for me, dealing with a constantly random WiFi connection dropping is not worth it.Perhaps if the firmware can be corrected, it would be a good router, but otherwise, it's junk to me.
We have been using this router for about a year now with no complaints. The signal is great, quality is good, speed is good, even when storms bring down electricity it doesn't take long to boot back up. For the price I'd definitely recommend. I even purchased a second for my parents house and they have had no complaints either. It gives you a preset password and information to register the machine and your Netgear account. It is a simple set up, this was my first time setting one up and I had no issues. Regarding signal ours reaches upstairs and out into our yard quite a ways. We also have multiple machines on it the majority of the time including TV, tablets, phones and laptops. It never slows the signal down. Overall great product.
This product does not perform as advertised. Feels a bit like a bait and switch. It clearly states in the manual and marketing literature that it supports up to 600MBPS speed while the actual hardware ports only allow 100MBPS. Feels a lot like false advertising when you are buying the device to allow for upgrading your internet lines in the future. This router will only support 100MBPS internet speeds. Very disappointed.
For a daily, albeit unprofessional user, I found this router OK. Setup was NOT intuitive, but accomplished. Attempts to change the factory setup keys to something I wished provided fruitless, so I just went with those provided. Firmware updating the router since production initially seemed to be problematic, but has since settled down and the router hasn't lost signal again. Signal strength and speed appears to now be solely a function of the ISP. Understanding this is an older router model is incumbent on the purchaser, and its performance should be adjudged accordingly. Generally you get what you pay for, and realize you can't put a saddle on a sow !
I would highly recommend this product to anyone that is comtiplating purchasing it.We bought this about three months ago and I admit at first i was skeptical because i bought it used.The repsose of the router was light years ahead of my old NETGEAR, the easy set up that comes in the package makes is very simple to get going.My wife was able to do this while I was at work with little understanding of how networks work. The wifi Password is printed on a label on the side of the device which is handy for anyone that stops by the house to be able to jump on the network.I currently run three tablets, two phones, two Ipods, playstation 3, Wii, and two Laptops on our network and the performance is perfect.I've read a few other reviews on this product and I dissagree with the users that say this router drops thier signal twice or more a day.My wife works from home, she runs an online fabric company and is never disconnected from the internet.She has not once had a dropped signal.I would suggest those expiriencing this check there ISP and possibly understand that the ISP is the issue.I will recommend this to everyone and anyone that asks me about a good router product. Not too expensive and continues to superscede my expectations every day.
Very disappointed in this router. When I first hooked it up, the download speed was unbelievably slow. I’m talking REALLY slow. After researching online, I found someone complaining of the same problem. Seems one of the default settings was the culprit. Had to go into the router settings to take care of this.After the change, the speed increased to acceptable levels. I thought, Great! Should be O.K. now. No such luck. I was experiencing periodic “drop outs” where the WiFi signal would be fine one minute, then just quit.. No explanation for this.....but just seems this router may not be the best. Also, the range of the WiFi signal left a lot to be desired. (My old Asus router could reach well into my back yard....this Netgear would not even reach all the rooms in my house. Was going to buy a WiFi signal extender, but with the “drop out” issues (now it works, now it doesn’t), I decided against investing anything more. I’ve had good routers and know how they should perform. This is definitely not one of them. Decided to return it and go back to Asus.

Just like many other reviewers.....I purchased the router 05-01-2016. I just got off my 6th call with technical support since I purchased it 03-15-18. The first couple calls were smooth because it was under warranty. After warranty, NetGear then tries to charge me a "support" fee on every subsequent call, just as other have reviewed. Also, it just shows NetGears greedy pig mentality to figure out how they can monetize off their customer while OTHER ROUTER VENDORS DO NOT DO THIS! Once again bitten by the insufficient descriptions and specifications of Amazon. The title, description, and picture clearly indicate a R6300v2 original from Netgear. What I got instead was a build specific to a particular provider (Charter Communications) that simply is not as versatile and stable as the unbranded version. It identifies itself with a different board ID so putting an alternative firmware on it is a problem. Plain Kong DD-WRT may work, advanced tomato and similar will not - you need specially prepared firmware files for this. One quick way to identify the branded routers in a blue instead of a yellow band on the front while still stating R6300v2 on the bottom.
UPDATE: I bought a second R6300v2 and once again: it was a Charter Communications device. If you are not an expert in technology DO NOT let any seller fool you into actually believing those two are indeed identical. Before applying any security updates, the manufacturer provided update process is checking an identifier in the router and Netgear is only providing those updates for their official products. The two routers may share the same hardware but the lack of manufacturer support for the Charter version is a a big minus, because it may leave your devices and network vulnerable to security exploits.
Of course there is way to re-badge a Charter device back into a genuine Netgear device but this involves a firmware downgrade to the oldest available version, a special software called "telnetEnabler", and some command line instructions in order to burn the genuine Netgear board_id into the router. After completing this procedure, neither Netgear nor sources of alternative firmware (DD-WRT, Advanced Tomato, etc.) may tell a difference and their firmware/updates install smoothly.
